I chose civil engineering because I wanted to understand how engineering knowledge is used to turn designs into safe, practical projects. After completing my undergraduate degree in civil engineering in China, I continued my studies at the University of Technology Sydney, where I am studying for a Master of Professional Engineering (Civil).

In 2024, I completed a six-month internship at Guangdong Jianye Project Management Co., Ltd., gaining approximately 1,040 hours of experience supporting site inspections, construction supervision and project documentation. While checking material records, I found a difference between the register and a delivery note. I asked the supervising engineer to confirm the correct information before updating the register. This experience showed me the importance of checking details and asking questions when information is unclear.

My internship strengthened my interest in construction and project coordination. I enjoyed seeing how engineers, supervisors and contractors worked together to manage quality, safety and progress. I hope to begin my career as a Graduate Civil Engineer and develop my skills in site engineering and project coordination. Internship Reflection

1) What were your expectations about your internship before you joined?

Before starting my internship, I expected to learn mainly by observing experienced engineers and following their instructions. I thought most of my work would involve reviewing drawings, completing simple records and learning site procedures. I hoped to understand how the civil engineering knowledge I had learned at university was used on construction projects. Because I had limited workplace experience, I expected to need close guidance when completing unfamiliar tasks.

2) What was the reality? How was it different from your expectations?

My internship at Guangdong Jianye Project Management Co., Ltd. lasted from March to September 2024 and provided approximately 1,040 hours of experience. My work included assisting with site inspections, progress monitoring, quality and safety checks, quantity records and project documentation. I also attended site meetings and recorded issues and follow-up actions. The role involved more communication and information checking than I had expected. I learned that construction supervision depended on both technical requirements and the accuracy of the information shared between people. Even supporting tasks required me to understand their purpose and recognise when clarification was needed. I also learned that construction progress must be considered alongside quality and safety. Completing work quickly is not sufficient when drawings or site requirements have not been met.

3) What lessons were the most important from your internship? Why were they important?

The most important lesson was to verify uncertain information before using it. While checking an Excel material register, I found a quantity that differed from the delivery note. I compared the date, material description and document number, then asked the supervising engineer to confirm the correct figure. After the engineer identified a recording error, I corrected the register under their guidance and retained the supporting document. Keeping the original delivery note also meant that the supervising engineer could trace the corrected entry back to its source.

This incident showed me that identifying a difference did not mean I knew which record was correct. My responsibility was to check and communicate the uncertainty, rather than make an unsupported change. I now see accurate documentation as part of engineering responsibility. In future, I will check source records systematically, flag unclear entries and keep a record of confirmed changes.

4) After your workplace experience, what would you say your value proposition would be to an employer? How can you demonstrate this?

I can offer practical experience in construction supervision support, careful documentation and a willingness to seek guidance. The material record example demonstrates my attention to detail and responsible use of information. My meeting notes and site records also show experience supporting communication within a project team. I recognise that I am still developing my technical judgement and need supervision for unfamiliar decisions. I would bring a careful approach to assigned work while continuing to learn from more experienced engineers.

5) How did your internship influence the type of role in which you are interested?

The internship strengthened my interest in site engineering and project coordination. I enjoyed seeing how drawings and technical requirements were translated into construction work, and how different project participants worked together. I hope to start as a Graduate Civil Engineer and develop towards site engineering or project coordination responsibilities. To prepare, I will continue improving my drawing interpretation, technical writing and communication skills. I also plan to seek feedback on my work and use it to identify specific areas for development.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am applying for a graduate civil engineering position in the Industrus Engineering Graduate Program, advertised through UTS. I am currently studying for a Master of Professional Engineering (Civil) at the University of Technology Sydney. My internship at Guangdong Jianye Project Management Co., Ltd. provided approximately 1,040 hours of experience in construction supervision and project coordination. Your structured training, mentoring and opportunities to work across project roles appeal to me because I want to build on this experience and develop broader engineering skills. My responses to the selection criteria follow.

3.1 A commitment to ethical conduct and the highest standards of professional accountability

During my internship, I demonstrated professional accountability when a quantity in a material register did not match its supporting delivery note. My task was to check the records and prepare the register for the supervising engineer’s review.

Finding a difference did not establish which figure was correct. I therefore treated the entry as requiring clarification rather than making an unsupported change. After confirming that the records referred to the same delivery, I highlighted the discrepancy and showed both documents to the engineer. I explained what I had found and asked for the correct figure to be verified. This allowed me to raise a concern while keeping the decision within the engineer’s authority.

Once the engineer confirmed a typing error, I corrected the register under their guidance, recorded the reason for the amendment and submitted it for review. The result was a corrected entry supported by a verified source and a clear explanation of the change.

I took responsibility for identifying and reporting the issue without claiming that I could resolve the uncertainty independently. This experience reflects my approach to professional accountability: check carefully, report accurately and follow through on authorised actions. I would bring these habits to Industrus when supporting project work and making decisions within the scope of my role.

3.2 Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both with other engineers and with stakeholders from different fields.

During a site meeting, the arrival time of a reinforcing steel delivery was unclear. The supervising engineer needed this information to arrange an inspection, while the contractor’s procurement assistant was responsible for contacting the supplier. I helped clarify the information and record the arrangements under my supervisor’s guidance.

I asked the procurement assistant to confirm the expected arrival time. I also checked with the engineer which material documents needed to be prepared, then communicated these requirements to the procurement assistant in a short written message. I adapted the content to their different responsibilities: the engineer needed delivery timing for inspection planning, while the procurement assistant needed clear instructions about the documents to request.

I recorded the expected arrival time, required documents and the person responsible for each action in a simple checklist. After my supervisor reviewed my notes, I shared the confirmed arrangements with both parties. The written record connected the information from the discussion with the actions each person needed to take.

As a result, the expected arrival time was clarified, allowing the engineer to plan the inspection. The procurement assistant also understood which documents to request from the supplier. Both parties had a clear record of their responsibilities.

This example demonstrates my ability to communicate across engineering and procurement roles. I used questions to establish the facts, concise messages to explain requirements and written records to support follow-up actions.

3.3 The ability to engage with a creative, innovative and proactive environment

For the steel delivery arrangements described above, I took the initiative to propose the checklist rather than simply record the discussion. The task involved coordinating delivery timing, document preparation and responsibilities. I saw an opportunity to bring these related details together in a format that both the engineer and procurement assistant could use.

I organised the checklist around three practical questions: when was the delivery expected, which documents were required, and who was responsible for each action? This connected the information to the preparation work rather than presenting it as a general meeting summary.

I used the information confirmed with the engineer and procurement assistant to prepare the checklist and submitted my notes to my supervisor for review before sharing them. This gave me a way to put my idea into practice while keeping the arrangements subject to supervision.

The completed checklist provided a single written reference for the delivery arrangements. It showed the preparation required and linked each action to a responsible person. My contribution was a small, practical improvement to how the information was organised and used for this task.

This experience demonstrates my willingness to contribute ideas and turn them into useful working tools. At Industrus, I would look for similar opportunities to improve everyday tasks, discuss suggestions with colleagues and implement changes with appropriate guidance.

3.4 Demonstrated ability to use and manage information

The material register task also demonstrates my ability to manage information through checking, correction and review. I worked with an Excel register and supporting delivery documents, making sure that information could be linked to its source.

When I found the inconsistent quantity, I compared the delivery date, material description and document number. These checks established that the two records referred to the same delivery and identified the quantity as the information needing verification. I highlighted the entry and presented it alongside the delivery note so that the engineer could compare the records directly.

After confirmation, I updated the quantity, documented the reason for the amendment and retained the original delivery note with the supporting records. I then submitted the revised register for review. Keeping the source document alongside the corrected record meant that the amendment remained traceable.

The final entry matched the verified information, and the engineer could review the corrected figure against its source and understand why it had changed. My work covered both the accuracy of the data and the supporting records needed to explain an update.

I would apply this approach to project documentation at Industrus by checking source information, clearly identifying inconsistencies and preserving the supporting records for confirmed changes.

3.5 The ability to manage your own performance in a professional environment.

On one working day during my internship, I needed to accompany the supervising engineer on a morning site inspection, attend an afternoon site meeting and organise the day’s records and photographs before leaving work. I was responsible for planning my documentation tasks around these fixed activities.

I first listed the tasks and their required completion times. I prioritised attendance at the inspection and meeting, then used the remaining time for documentation. After each activity, I completed my notes while the details were still fresh. Before submission, I checked the dates, inspection locations and attachments against my checklist.

I submitted the records on time. During the review, my supervisor pointed out that some photograph captions did not identify locations precisely enough. I promptly added the floor and area details and included this requirement in my checklist for future submissions. The feedback helped me distinguish between checking that a location was recorded and checking that it was specific enough for another person to use.

I addressed both the immediate correction and the way I would check subsequent work. This demonstrates that I can organise priorities, meet a deadline and respond constructively to feedback. At Industrus, I would continue to review my work before submission and use supervision to identify specific improvements, rather than measure my performance only by whether I finished on time.

3.6 A demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and to show leadership when required.

Before a project inspection, I worked with two other interns to organise recent inspection records, meeting minutes and site photographs for our supervisor’s review. Initially, responsibilities were unclear, so some files were being processed twice while others had not been assigned to anyone.

I proposed creating a document checklist and discussed dividing the work by document type with my colleagues. We agreed on a consistent file-naming format. I took responsibility for the inspection records and kept track of the completion of each section. Agreeing on the division of work gave everyone a clear contribution to make while allowing me to follow the progress of the overall task.

When one colleague could not locate some meeting minutes, I finished the set of records I was handling and helped with the search. I also checked the file locations with the colleague responsible for archiving. Before combining our work, we exchanged documents and checked each other’s sections for missing or duplicate files.

We completed the task within the required timeframe and submitted the categorised records for review. Responsibility for files that had previously been duplicated or left unassigned was clarified, and our supervisor could use the checklist to locate the corresponding documents.

I demonstrated leadership by helping the group agree on a practical approach, while contributing through my own work and support for colleagues. I would bring this collaborative approach to Industrus by clarifying responsibilities, following up on progress and helping the team complete shared tasks.
